Identify the transmission by position, not appearance

For each asset, collect the nameplate, manual, part number, photographs of the chain and both sprockets, and images showing guards, tensioner, and travel path. State the asset, position, function, and required quantity. Record markings, attachments, connecting link, special plates, coating, or multi-strand configuration. A used chain may be elongated or altered during a previous repair, so technical personnel must review observations.

Measure and document pitch, width, number of strands, and length or number of pitches where known. For sprockets, record tooth count, declared pitch, strands, observed outside diameter, hub type, bore, keyway, set screws, and mounting direction. State units and how measurements were taken. A matching tooth count does not confirm that profile, hub, or shaft interface is correct.

Also describe service: driven equipment, known speed, load, cycles, environment, dust, moisture, washdown, corrosion, temperature, lubrication, and maintenance access. If the chain moves product, loads, guards, hot material, or a safety-relevant part, include it as a constraint. Separate chains, sprockets, and accessories in the request

A clear requisition avoids requesting a “drive kit” with undefined contents. Create lines for the chain, driving sprocket, driven sprocket, tensioner, guide, connecting link, covers, fasteners, and accessories where applicable. Specify whether a continuous chain, cut length, number of links, or assembled set is requested. For each sprocket, identify its shaft position and mounting elements expected by the plant.

Do not group components from different equipment under one measurement. Two transmissions may share pitch but require different configurations because of shaft, space, alignment, or function. If the asset includes supports or industrial bearings from China, treat them as lines with their own data and criteria. A chain proposal does not automatically resolve the condition of other assembly elements.

Also define the purchase purpose: repair, scheduled shutdown, inventory, or new project. Distinguish critical references and determine who will release an alternative. A supplier may state its offering’s characteristics, but the buyer must analyze whether that information meets its specification and operating conditions. Do not use a catalog description as confirmation of capacity, service life, or equivalence.

Compare interfaces and installation criteria

When reviewing proposals, request identification of every chain and sprocket, declared dimensions, quantity, configuration, declared materials, accessories, packaging, and assumptions. Compare them with an asset-by-asset matrix. Make changes in series, strands, hub, bore, keyway, tooth count, length, or attachments visible; such changes require the technical owner to determine whether further evaluation is needed.

Compatibility is not limited to meshing between two new parts. Internally review shafts, keys, fastening elements, alignment, tension, guides, lubrication, guards, and installation space.
